How to Fix a Program That Won’t Uninstall on Windows

If a program refuses to uninstall in Windows, you are not alone. Sometimes the normal Apps & features or Installed apps menu does not work, and you may see an error message such as:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.

This can happen when the uninstall process is broken, the installer package is damaged, or old registry information prevents the program from being removed properly.

In this guide, I will show you how to remove a stuck program on Windows using Microsoft’s official uninstall troubleshooter. In this example, I used it to remove ZEPETO Build It, but the same method can work for many other desktop programs.

1. Why a Program May Not Uninstall Properly

Some Windows programs do not uninstall correctly because of installer errors, damaged uninstall files, or registry issues left behind after a failed installation or update.

When this happens, removing the app from the normal Windows settings menu may fail, even though the program still appears in the installed program list.

2. Download Microsoft’s Uninstall Troubleshooter

To fix this issue, go to Microsoft Support and download the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.

This official Microsoft tool is designed to repair problems that block programs from being installed or removed. It can also fix corrupted registry keys related to installation and uninstall issues.

After downloading the file, run it on your Windows PC.

Because the goal is to delete a program, choose Uninstalling or Removing when prompted.

The first scan usually takes less than a minute.

This method may also help if you cannot remove a program from Windows settings, if the uninstall button does not work, or if the software remains stuck after a failed installation.

5. Start the Removal Process

The troubleshooter will begin fixing the uninstall problem and removing the selected program.

This may take several minutes depending on the software and your system environment.

Once the process is complete, you should see a message indicating that the issue has been fixed or that the program was successfully removed.

If you want more details, click View detailed information. Otherwise, close the tool.

6. Check Remaining Shortcuts

In some cases, desktop shortcuts are not deleted automatically.

If the shortcut is still on your desktop, try opening it. Windows may show a popup saying the shortcut target no longer exists and ask whether you want to delete the shortcut.

Click Yes to remove it.

After that, go back to Installed apps or Apps & features and confirm that the program has disappeared from the list.

Final Thoughts

If a program will not uninstall and shows a Windows Installer package error, Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter is one of the easiest ways to remove it safely.

This method is especially useful when the normal uninstall option fails, the installer is broken, or the software remains stuck in the installed program list.

If you are dealing with a stubborn desktop program like ZEPETO Build It, this fix is worth trying before using more advanced manual cleanup methods.

FAQ

What does “There is a problem with this Windows Installer package” mean?

It usually means Windows cannot complete the installation or uninstall process because part of the installer is missing, corrupted, or blocked.

Can I use this method for any program?

This method works best for traditional Windows desktop programs. Microsoft notes that Microsoft Store apps should be troubleshooted differently.

Will desktop shortcuts be deleted automatically?

Not always. Sometimes the main program is removed but the shortcut remains. In that case, simply delete the broken shortcut manually.
